Inventor Licensing Stuck in the Trial Loop.

Danielle Epperson. In my years of doing tech support here at D3 I've answered many different kinds of support issues pertaining to every package from Inventor to Revit. Some come in and before the person is halfway through explaining their issue I know what's wrong, and others may take me a while.

Some go off to the magical land of development, while for others a suitable workaround is found. But then there's that one kind of support question that all of the Implementation Consultants dread: the vague, random, and sporadic issue. The one that the user can's get to happen when we're watching but swears it happens 10 times a day. We don't doubt you; it's just hard to fix a problem when you can't see it.

The truth is that the cause of these vague ghost-like issues could be any number of things and could take a long time to figure out. As I've learned the ways of tech support I've found that for AutoCAD issues that fall under this category there is a nifty little tool in your programs called Reset Settings to Default. This has gotten me out of many run-ins with the vague case. For years I've always wished that Inventor had something like that. While the "tech center" the conference was held at lacked very much "tech," we did learn a lot.

One part of the conference was based around technical support for Inventor. Autodesk's very own Nathan Chandler talked us through a brutal 80 slide presentation that ended just shy of 2 hours.

Yeah, a 2 hour presentation on support; see what we go through for you? Anyway, one of those slides caught my attention. Nathan was going through things that we can do before we get Autodesk involved in cases, and one of those tools was a factory reset for Inventor! I had to look at it again, I was so shocked. So here's the deal. This tool doesn't install with Inventor. You have to download it.

I will provide the link below. The reset is not just for newer versions of Inventor either. It supports back to which if you're reading this and still have Inventor, please, give us a call, for your own good. It works much like the AutoCAD reset so you'll have to make sure to save anything you have customized. Anything library-based - Content Center, Materials, Appearances - are safe.

If you are unsure on how to backup any of this please call D3 Tech Support and we can walk you through it. Here is a list of the affected areas:. Once everything is backed up you need to make sure the Windows User Account Controls are lowered. The best way to get to the UAC is to hit your start button in windows and in the search window at the bottom just start typing UAC.

Once that's all done extract the reset tool from the download and double click the executable file. Once the tool starts up it will automatically sniff out the version of Inventor you're running and select it.

If it selects the wrong one, then just change the selection to the correct one and hit the reset button at the bottom. Now it is my hope that this reset will help us out on a lot of these "vague" issues I talked about earlier, but I'm not making any promises.

As you know all computers and the software on them act differently. Also this tool is fairly new so you know how new stuff can sometimes be.

If you do run it, be sure to make yourself a restore point beforehand just in ase it hurts more than it helps. I don't believe that would happen but, hey, better safe than sorry, right? Below is the link to where you can download the reset tool.

You have a problem that forces you to reset the license type. To change the license type, first change the software licensing option. To reset the product license, use the Autodesk Licensing Installer Helper tool (AdskLicensingInstHelper) and then delete the file.
